Watch for my article on Power of Attorney in Caregiver Solutions magazine
Posted by
Lynne Butler, BA LLB
The latest issue (winter 2012) of Caregiver Solutions Magazine carries a feature-length article of mine called "Their power of attorney names you...now what?" In the article, I talk about how to use a power of attorney on behalf of another person efficiently and without getting into trouble. In addition to the main article, I give 10 tips for acting under the POA, and 10 tips for dealing with the paperwork. So far, an electronic version of the article isn't available, so if you'd like to read it, you should check out newsstands for the magazine pictured below, or contact the magazine at www.caregiversolutions.ca.

Attached is a link to a very good article in Solutions Magazine which talks about how the sex lives of seniors are still very much alive. It discusses how medications can either help or hinder a senior's sex life and gives tips on how to have "the talk" about safe sex with a senior parent who is beginning to date again. Life Without a Car: Helping Seniors Adjust
Posted by
Lynne Butler, BA LLB

There is an excellent article in the latest issue of Solutions Magazine called "Life Without a Car: Helping Seniors Adjust". If you're faced with a parent who really shouldn't be driving anymore, this article will help you deal with the issue. The author, Arif Abdulla, seems to have the kind of approach that I personally like, which is to use diplomacy rather than force, and to have some compassion for the elderly person whose life is being changed by your actions.

Visiting your elderly relative
Posted by
Lynne Butler, BA LLB
If you have a parent, other relative or friend who is elderly, you may have noticed that your visits to him or her are sometimes pretty stagnant. Once you run out of news, there isn't much to talk about. I just read an article in Solutions Magazine called Top Ten Ideas for Visits With Seniors that I recommend to anyone who spends time with seniors. The article combines creativity and compassion with common sense - always my favourite mix. There are ideas there you WILL be able to use. There are some I am planning to try. Click here to see the article online.

New article in Solutions Magazine Summer 2009
Posted by
Lynne Butler, BA LLB

I have a new two-page article in the Summer 2009 issue of Solutions Magazine (http://www.solutionsmagazine.ca/) called "The Role of a Caregiver When an Elderly Person Makes a Will." I wrote this article because many people who are helping to look after ageing parents feel offended or upset when the lawyers helping the elderly people ask the caregivers to leave the room. Perhaps lawyers are not doing a very good job of explaining why it's important. My article goes into quite a bit of detail about why a caregiver is asked to leave the room and what the elderly person and the caregiver should expect from the situation. I hope you get a chance to read this excellent magazine, which is absolutely packed with practical information for seniors and their families.
