This column by Audrey Miller talks about some of the questions you should be considering as you choose the person who will act as your power of attorney for personal care (in different parts of Canada, the document appointing your representative is also called a Personal Directive, an Advance Health Care Directive or Health Care Proxy).
As Ms. Miller discusses, you need to put some real thought into your choice. Think about what you are asking them to do for you if the time comes. You want them to choose your health care, select treatments or doctors, or even select the long-term care facility in which you might live.
