BC nurse loses her job after assuming power of attorney and taking elderly woman's coin collection

In British Columbia, Jacqueline Orina, the director of a long-term care facility filled an application form full of lies about an 86-year-old woman in order to get that woman to move into the facility. The older woman didn't want to move in, and didn't have the medical conditions Orina said she had, including dementia. But Orina didn't stop there. She somehow persuaded the older woman to name Orina as attorney under her Enduring Power of Attorney. Then she went to the woman's home without the woman's knowledge or permission, and helped herself to the woman's coin collection.

Later, when this and other fraudulent facts started to come out, Orina told one of her workers to return the coin collection and keep her mouth shut. Unfortunately for Orina, but luckily for the older woman in question, the worker had a conscience and let the story out.

So, what do you suppose has happened to Orina now that the facts have come out? Jail time, maybe? Apparently not. She has been fired from her job. The BC College of Registered Nurses has blackballed her so that she can't work as a nurse for the next five years.

Why this nurse hasn't been charged criminally is not clear to me. It seems to me that losing your job isn't nearly punishment enough for invading the older woman's life, stealing her coin collection (value not stated in the story), manipulating her for Orina's own financial gain, and using her position at work to find and target a likely victim.

When contacted by CBC for a comment, Orina said that she herself was the victim, so clearly she feels no responsibility or remorse.

I, for one, am hoping there is going to be more to this story, including an arrest on criminal charges. Nobody should be able to get away with several acts of fraud and theft against a vulnerable person.

  1. Orina said that she herself was the victim[..] ??
I don't disagree that perhaps she be charged but many do far worse and just get a slap on the wrist. Now, if that had happened to my mother I would probably not be so lenient. Having said that, do we want to destroy that nurse? Sad story for a Mother's Day.

    1. I guess I don't think of it as destroying her. I just hate that she's free to carry on and do this again.

  2. She's probably going to move to Ontario and "get on with her life". (Carry on as before and identify her next victim..)

    1. Though I hate to say it, people rob their own blood blind on a regular basis. Greed makes monsters of people.
