How a certified business valuator measures worth

When I talk to clients about what they want to do with their business in the future, the conversation often turns to selling the business. Sometimes the plan is for an outright sale, and at other times we talk about transferring the business to one of the client's children through a sale or freeze. Every conversation eventually gets to a discussion of what the business is worth.

Business owners aren't always particularly good at estimating the value of their own businesses. I don't find this surprising, as every business is unique so there isn't always a similar sale to compare it to. And business owners sometimes don't realize that the business might not have the same value if it's a small shop and they will no longer be there to play a part. Other business owners tell me they don't have the foggiest idea about the value.

I think it's worthwhile to get a professional business valuation from an accredited valuator. To learn more about how these folks do their jobs, click here to read an article from Get Growing For Business Blog.
