While it's Canada Day everywhere across this wonderful country of ours, it's also Memorial Day here in Newfoundland and Labrador. On July 1, 1916, 780 men participated in the battle of Beaumont-Hamel. Only 68 were alive to answer roll call the next day. My great-uncle, Harry Butler, age 19, was one of the many who were killed. Newfoundlanders remember the loss of these brave young men, a devastating loss to what was then a tiny British colony.
