Watch for me in the Globe and Mail "Report on Business"

I'm very pleased to announce that I'll be writing a regular column for the Globe and Mail on business succession planning for their Report on Business section. Watch for my first column on February 1, and then every four weeks after that. As if you all didn't get enough of me already. As always, comments and ideas are always welcome.

I just discovered your blog and I'm blown away by the amount of valuable/straight forward advice here. I've read through about 6 months worth of blog posts in the last few hours and learned a lot about what to expect when my time comes to act as an executor. I'll definitely keep an eye out for your articles in the G&M.
ReplyDeleteI actually found your blog while looking for the answer to the following question: what is the legal procedure for a testator to give an advance to a benefactor for a portion of their inheritance? In this case, the niece of the testator is named as a specific benefactor in the will, but is very short on money and the testator has offered to advance them some of the money that they will inherit when the time comes. I am the executor named in this will and want to make sure that this advance is properly documented so that it won't complicate my life down the road. Would a signed statement from the testator indicating the date/sum of money/fact that it is an advance on the amount specified in the will be sufficient? Or is anything more required? Finally, it hopefully will be a number of years before the testator passes away, so when the will is being executed, is there an accepted procedure for taking inflation into account when determining the difference between the advance and the amount stated in the will?
Well thanks. Always nice to start the week with some praise! I think many readers would like to know the answer to your question so I'm going to answer it in a separate blog post dated Jan 23/12.

fantastic submit, very informative. I'm wondering why the other experts of this sector do not realize this. You must proceed your writing. I'm confident, you have a huge readers' base already!
