Estate planning for unmarried couples

In this article from the Financial Post, Jon Chevreau discusses the fact that common law couples don't necessarily have the same rights regarding inheritance as do married couples. I agree that many are taken by surprise when a partner has died and it's too late to do anything but drag the estate through the courts. For some reason, people assume that if they believe themselves to be a couple, the rest of the world, including the government, the legal system and the tax system will all somehow know about it.
