I'm attaching a link to an article that talks about why you need a health care proxy (which in Canada is called a Personal Directive, Health Care Directive, or Advance Directive). This is from a site called Answers for Elders.
One of the points the author makes is that a health care directive is not the same as a living will. Most people know that the end-of-life decision is covered by a living will but perhaps don't realize that a health care directive includes that decision as well as much more. Most estate planning lawyers, including me, recommend that when you get your Will made, you should also have documents prepared to deal with possible future incapacity. The health care directive is one of the important documents that helps you in case of incapacity.

Is there a conflict for someone outside the family to have proxy and be the sole beneficiary?
