10 warning signs of Alzheimer's disease

Today I attended a lecture given by Arlene Huhn of the Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories. Now this is a lady who really knows her stuff. She gave us the clearest explanation I have ever heard of what Alzheimer's disease is, how it progresses and how it affects people. She advised that 500,000 Canadians currently have Alzheimer's disease, and a surprisingly large number of them are under age 65.

Anyone who has recently been diagnosed with this disease, or has a loved one who has recently been diagnosed really should contact the Alzheimer Society to get information and support. Here is the link to their site. The phone number for the Alberta office is 780-488-2266.

The following is excerpted from a brochure published by the Alzheimer Society, entitled 10 Warning Signs:

1. Memory loss that affects day-to-day abilities
2. Difficulty performing familiar tasks
3. Problems with language
4. Disorientation in time and space
5. Poor or decreased judgment
6. Problems with abstract thinking
7. Misplacing things
8. Changes in mood and behaviour
9. Changes in personality
10. Loss of initiative.

    1. You're welcome. Dementia affects so many of my clients, or the parents of my clients, that I feel compelled to make sure that families are aware of it.
